Gold and Honey!

The law of the LORD is perfect reviving the soul. The statutes of the LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple. The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring for ever. The ordinances of the LORD are sure and altogether righteous. They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. By them you servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward.

Psalm 19.7-11

Gold! I wonder what this simple word conjures up in your mind. Used from the beginning of recorded history for things of great value and importance. Used in abundance in the Tabernacle symbolising God’s presence among his people until settled in the Promised Land it was again used to embellish the Temple. Referred to 441 times in the NIV translation and in every case representing great and precious things. Occurs naturally in creation as an indication of the richness of God majesty. Brought as one of the three gifts to the child Jesus by the wise Men. A symbol of marriage faithfulness in the giving and receiving of rings. And so we could go on

Honey! The product of one of the most amazing insects in creation the Honey Bee in a number of different genera. A symbol of sweetness and used throughout history to bring that sweetness to food and as we saw earlier in the week in the case of Jonathan a reviver in special circumstances.

I could say much more but just want to leave you with the challenge today of how the Psalmist saw God’s Law, Statutes, Precepts and Ordinances which brought together make up our Bibles – the very Word of God.

Is God’s Word as precious to you as Gold?  To an extent we all strive for riches – looking for that first pay packet, the annual pay rise, an increase in pension payments. Even a win on the Lottery!

Do we value God’s Word in the same way? Do we work mine the riches of God’s Word which are freely available? In them is all we need for godliness Titus 1.1-3.

Then is the Word of God sweet to you? Something that is a delight to live with, something you cannot do without? Something which enables us to be the people God wants us to be.?

O Lord, help me to value your word and to immerse myself in it appreciating its supreme value as it points me to Jesus.
